Thissss. You cannot one-sidedly rebuild a relationship through force. Now this book is probably gonna end in forgiveness of some type, but damn, I hope she still denies treating him as trusted family. To be constantly unsure of someone’s intentions when they’re inclined to act sneaky is just too stressful; she’ll always have doubts, so it’d be best not to bother.
I had a coworker who would say something serious & then flip it around as a joke. Constantly, constantly, constantly did this. One day he did it and tried to get me in trouble for laughing because I thought it was a weird punchline. Luckily others had seen his behavior often enough to stand up for me, and after that I ignored everything he said except for what involved actual work.

He knows if he didn’t do this, then she will still hate him. There is no real way to fix it, so he’s trying. I can’t blame him for that, even if it isn’t the correct thing to do. The only correct thing to do would go away but that will never fix anything.

True. He’s overstepping but there’s no other way to do it. If he left her alone they’d be estranged forever. Roan was also young and heavily influenced by his older brother’s and father’s indifference. I really blame their father for not fixing this sooner. She wanted(needed) him to step up like this a long time ago and seeing it now, when she’s finally come to terms with never being loved by them, is why dealing with Roan is so painful. But at the same time if he did nothing, like she wanted, that would be painful to her in a different way. It’s definitely good he’s making an effort, if only to validate Violet that she wasn’t at fault for the dissolution of their relationship.
